Diabetic foot health & prevention

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage in the feet and lower limbs caused by high blood glucose. Regular care helps prevent wounds and infection.
Understanding your risk

Three kinds of nerves, three kinds of risk

Sensory nerves

Loss of protective sensation: not feeling objects in shoes, hot or cold, bunched socks, or pain that would warn of injury.

Autonomic nerves

Sweat glands stop working well, causing dry, cracked skin and thick, brittle nails. Circulation drops and infection risk rises.

Motor nerves

Muscles stop holding the 26–28 foot bones in place. Bones shift and create pressure points that can break the skin.

Burning, tingling and numbness in the feet are common signs of diabetic neuropathy.
Broken skin lets microbes into deeper tissue. Unhealed wounds and infections can lead to systemic infection and, in some cases, amputation. Prevention matters.

Taking the first step

  • Book every 4–6 weeks with your Reg. PodOrtho® Foot Specialist for foot care and diabetic foot screening.
  • Test your blood glucose daily and report readings outside your normal range to your primary care provider.
  • Take medications as prescribed.
  • Inspect your feet and lower limbs every day.
  • Wear shoes indoors and outdoors.
  • If you have lost sensation, sweep your hand through your shoes before putting them on.
  • Avoid soaking your feet at home to prevent burns and dry skin.
