Toenail infections may be caused by fungus, but sometimes other microorganisms may cause infections in and under the nail plate such as: Mold, Bacteria, Viruses and Parasites.

Many of these microorganisms feed on keratin, a structural protein within your nails. Microorganism colonies proliferate in warm, moist, dark environments such as shoes and socks and invade the nail bed and below into the germinal matrix by penetrating the margins of the nail.

Although the infected nail itself is not painful the longer the infection remains untreated the infection may spread to other nails and to the surrounding skin. Since dermatophytes live under the nail delivering medication to the affected site via topical or oral methods is often ineffective and may not reach the affected area.

The FDA warns using some medications may cause serious liver or adrenal gland complications.

Fungal toenail infections can spread from person to person or from contaminated surfaces. Sharing nail clippers, shoes, socks, or towels may increase the risk of transmission.
